Hemp seed oil (also called hemp oil) derives from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. It is rich in omega fatty acids (omega-6 and omega-3), nutrients and minerals, making it an excellent, nourishing oil for locs.
Hemp seed oil ranks among the vegetable oils containing the most essential fatty acids.
Fatty acids have a hydrophilic (meaning that like water) end that aids in moisture retention, and a hydrophobic (that doesn’t like water) end that boosts shine. Hemp seed oil is a perfect product for dry locs.
People will not get high when using hemp seed oil, as it contains no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and little to no CBD.

Overnight hemp seed oil treatment for dry locs
Your locs are feeling dry and brittle? Do an overnight oil treatment:
- Apply pure hemp seed oil directly on dry locs.
- Press the oil onto your locs to help penetrate the product.
- Cover your hair with a shower cap or a plastic bag.
- Leave it overnight.
- Shampoo your hair twice in the morning.
Hemp seed oil is very sensitive to heat. We don’t recommend warming this oil before applying to your locs as it will oxidise very quickly and you will lose the benefits of it.
Does hemp seed oil contain THC?
THC is the abbreviation for tetrahydrocannabinol. It’s the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis; the substance that produces the “high” associated with smoking marijuana.
The oil is derived from hemp seed and has an extremely low THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content <20 mg/kg. Some oils don’t contain psychotropic substances at all.
What is the difference between CBD oil and hemp seed oil?
Hemp seed oil and CBD (Cannabidiol) oil are very different oils.
CBD oil comes from the stalks, leaves, and flowers of the hemp plant. These contain a higher concentration of CBD, which is a naturally-occurring chemical component with numerous potential health and cosmetic benefits.
On the other hand, hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. The seeds do not contain CBD, but they still have a rich profile of nutrients, fatty acids, and useful bioactive ingredients that can also have health and cosmetic benefits.
How to recognise if there is hemp seed oil in your product?
Check the ingredient list, also called INCI list. If there is “Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil”, your product contains hemp seed oil. The closer it is in the beginning of the list, the higher quantity there is.
How to store hemp seed oil?
This vegetable oil is very sensitive to oxidation. It is recommended to keep pure hemp seed oil for 6 to 8 months after opening in a very cool place (preferably in the refrigerator), in its original packaging, closed, protected from air and light.
